Carl Islands is one of the Numbers of Rebellion and one of their most important members. He was revealed to be the father of Abraham Carter, in actuality on the side of the Union.
Appearance[]
Carl is an old, bald, spectacled obese man who is dressed in a white doctor robe. His teeth have turned yellow from excessively smoking marijuana.
Carl's true form is a house-sized brain, extracted from his body long ago to grow in culture fluid without his skull's constraints.
During his fight with Ikki, he transforms himself into a blond, young adult version of his opponent, based on his projections for when the Sword God will reach his peak.
Personality[]
Long before meeting Carl, Alice implies that he may be a liar and unfair as the paintings, which Sara sold were worth a lot more than the cost of her operation, meaning that she could have paid off her debt and wouldn't have needed to join Akatsuki. This is soon revealed to be false as he's using both the deal between the League and Union to turn the latter into the enemies having maintained the existence of the Tyrant instead of revealing that he died a long time ago.
He is highly sadistic, having both Sara and Rinna tortured in front of Kouzou using the illusion forms of two flame users damaging their mind and soul. Befitting his title as the Grand Professor, Carl is a madman seeking out test subjects to research supernatural powers, not caring about the ideals of justice that the Union seeks and instead desires to authority over the people from the war criminal countries.
Carl's true goal is to create the strongest life-form in the world, which he attempted to through creating Abraham Carter, but realized that he was nothing more than a machine and magic creature who didn't inherit a desperado's power to overcome fate. He soon set his sights on Adam Goetia's Device, which contains the "Ultimate Soul" and Stella who could give birth to the "Ultimate Body".
Carl proclaims to seek equality among humanity by turning non-Blazers into Blazers, and eventually all Blazers into Desperados. Despite this, he has little regard for human life, seeing Blazers as mere guinea pigs to advance his plans, and is highly contemptuous toward anyone who gets in his way.
History[]
At some point, Carl was asked by Kouzou Kazamatsuri to treat his adopted daughter Sara's brittle bone disease. Sara wasn't completely healed but she obtained a body that could at least move.

When Rebellion's headquarters were destroyed by Or-Gaule, and his followers, Carl was not present. Carl is also mentioned being one of the only three people in Rebellion who know Adam Goetia's location.
He kidnaps Stella Vermillion, and denies to let her go after Ikki demands he do so. This leads to the final battle where it’s revealed Islands is in fact a giant brain, and has been experimenting on Stella to birth the “ultimate body”. He also made her go through torture in her mind for 70 years, so that he could possess her with a mind control worm. Ikki and company arrive and kill his main body before revealing what he did to Stella, prompting a fight where Shizuku fuses Ikki into Stella to free her. Ikki manages to free the love of his life from Carl’s control after striking her with his blade, and Stella burns the worm he implanted.
Abilities[]
Water Manipulation: His ability as a Blazer, Carl is considered the world's most skilled water user. He specializes in Cell Magic (細胞魔法, Saibou Mahou), using water as the basis of life to create and manipulate cells. Like Shizuku, he can vaporize his own body to avoid physical attacks, though the ability can be negated with ice magic. He can mutate the cells of others. He could even create a perfect clone of Adam Goetia using a simple strand of hair.
Genius Intellect: Carl is a brilliant man from the Union, being the person who created the Hadron Cannons and EDY mechanical soldiers, pushing the United States ahead of the rest of the world in terms of military strength and development.
Master Doctor: Carl is an extremely skilled doctor, even alleviating Sara's illness.
Equipment[]
Darwin (ダーウィン): His Device takes form as a flesh-colored Revolver. It is capable of transforming into other weapons, and even other creatures. Carl's brain can remotely control his body via Darwin, and by implanting pieces of it into Stella after suppressing her personality, he gained total control over her body.
