Rakudai V9 Illus07

Four Desperados (Edelweiss, Iris Ascarid, Fu Xiaoli and Abraham Carter) witnessing Ikki reaching his own Awakening.

Desperado (()(じん) Majin, lit. "Demonic Person") is a unique group of Blazers, who have shattered the chains of Destiny (運命(うんめい) Unmei, lit. "Fate") that bound them.

Description[]

Those who had surpassed being human, and would fight against each other one day to decide the future of the world.
Rakudai V9 Illus06

Ikki reaching his Awakening.

It has always been explained that Blazer's mana is determined from birth and it would never increase no matter the training. Edelweiss elaborates that their fixed mana is the limit that the world would allow them, meaning that Blazers such as Stella, an A-Rank with thirty times the mana of an average Blazer, has a greater role in the world compared to those who have less mana, as Ikki, who has the lowest mana even among F-Ranks.

Whenever Blazers reach the limit of their potential, most if not all of them see black chains wrapped around them, which represent the "chains of fate", the limit of how far the world would allow them to proceed.

However, there are beings who were able to break those chains binding them achieving what is referred to as an Awakening (覚醒(ブルート・ソウル) Burūto Sōru, lit. "Brute Soul") thus putting them outside fate becoming known as a Desperado. As shown by Ikki who reached his Awakening, a Desperado can raise the upper limit of their mana, which an ordinary Blazer cannot due since they are bound by fate. Having stepped out of their original fate, Desperados exists between the boundary of a human and a demon.

It has been explained that the exact method of achieving ones' Awakening has been explained as carrying ones' potential as a Blazer to the absolute limit, as well as having the will to ascend even higher than that resulting in the ranking up of their soul. Or-Gaule has proven Awakening can be forced as he had done to his older sister, Iris Gaule, using Marionette, as well as reaching his own Awakening at the age of ten possibly by using the same method, which would involve making the soul unstable.

Abilities[]

Desperados are beings known to have greater mana than that of normal Blazers due to them being able to raise the upper limits of their mana depending on their training. As beings who broke the chains of fate binding them, a Desperado possess an "attractive force" which enables them to influence the cause and effect of the world around them. As such, if the fate that they force upon is inevitable, the process leading up to it can be skipped and the end result will be manifested in an instant; because of this, a Desperado can immobilize, wound, or kill Blazers just by having such strong intentions in their minds.

Desperados are also immune to Noble Arts like Nameless Glory because they exist outside of fate, meaning that they aren't bound by the same rules as normal people or Blazers. Due to them being able to manipulate fate itself, it is a common belief that the only ones who can defeat a Desperado are other Desperado.

The only method to defending against the "attraction force" exerted by Desperados is to have strong faith in your own unshakable abilities. This can at times be extremely difficult in heated combat, and very few normal Blazers are able to stand alone and hold their own against a Desperado.

Excessive Awakening[]

Achieving "Brute Soul" is when a Blazer overcomes fate and transforms their soul into a person not bound by fate, and so it is called that because it is like having the soul of a beast. There is a rumor that a Desperado using the power from undergoing "Brute Soul" too much will result in their body changing to match the shape of their changed soul and they will also gain enormous power in exchange of losing their humanity.
—— Excessive Awakening, Volume 14

Among Desperado, there is a second lesser-known transformation accessible to those who were said to have used too much power obtained upon their "Awakening", Excessive Awakening (覚醒(かくせい)超過(ちょうか) Kakusei Chōka, lit. "Excessive Awakening"), causing them to assume a transformation that resembles their soul that crossed between the borders of Human and Demon, crossing over to the Demon. As such, Excessive Awakening causes them to assume demonic features ranging from black skin, horns, wings, tail, etc., as well as their being some alteration to their size, but the overall appearances depends on the person using it, as Nene Saikyo resembles an Oni, whereas Stella resembles a Dragon, the latter being due to being a Conceptual-type Blazer based on a "Dragon".

Accessing this unique transformation, a Desperado could obtain an enormous increase in mana, in addition to their Devices, which is connected to their souls to become "one" with them, causing them and their bodies to become much studier and stronger than normal enough to be in a much higher realm compared to other powerful Blazers, with previous wounds beforehand healing upon assuming this form. Assuming this form, Naseem Al-Salem has mana superior to that of Stella, which is considered the greatest in the League of Mage-Knight Nations and is comparable to Arthur Bright, one of the three strongest Desperados in the world. One still has access to their Noble Arts and other abilities, but are empowered much greater than before.

The exact conditions for entering Excessive Awakening is unknown, but experienced enough users can activate and deactivate it at will without much trouble at all compared to inexperienced users, the first experienced one was Naseem Al-Salem who activated it against Nene. However, both Nene and Stella would assume this transformation under abrupt conditions, as Nene would assume this form in her fight with Naseem, having abandoned her Humanity to fight him, but would soon regain herself and return to normal. Stella, on the other hand, assumed hers in grief after Ikki died in front of her by Or-Gaule losing her sanity and Humanity, but maintained some of her consciousness to not rampage, however, he was revived by Shizuku Kurogane. As such, for those not experienced with Excessive Awakening this would cause them to rum amok and clouding their intellect and judgement, acting like actual Demons.

Among them, Tendou Harima would abuse Excessive Awakening causing him to remain in this state where he could no longer be referred to as a normal Human, maintaining his consciousness despite being frozen and having a body as strong as his Device, with wounds that are supposed to be fatal for normal people not affecting him. In addition to this, Tendou could shift from a tangible and spiritual form, similar to Shizuku and Naseem. However, theirs shifting involves altering their bodies' to match their elements, whereas, his spiritual form is a literal mass of mana that lets him phase through attacks.

However, despite the advantages that Excessive Awakening provides a person, whether or not one masters it, instead of a blessing, this could be viewed more as the outcome of a weak person unable to bare the fate of being Human.
